Care & Maintenance: Wood Surfaces

TUOHY wood products are finished with a highly durable, water-based finish. This finish is designed to protect wood surfaces against common spills such as ink, perfume, nail polish, nail polish remover, food stains and beverages. As you will read below, it is important to act quickly and remove stains and spills at once.

We strongly encourage adopting a program of regular and consistent maintenance of your finely crafted wood furniture. This will preserve the elegance of your product and protect your investment for many years to come.

Protective Practices

  • Use desk pads under all writing surfaces and under business machines.
  • Avoid extreme heat and humidity since these can be harmful to wood furniture. Do not place products in direct sunlight, near radiators or air conditioning vents, humidifiers, fireplaces, etc.
  • Use coasters under hot objects, such as coffee pots and cups.
  • Avoid using polishes and waxes. They build up and compromise the protective qualities of today’s sophisticated wood finishes.

Regular Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Regular dusting will help avoid build-up of dirt and grime that can dull the finish.
  • Clean with a damp cloth and follow the grain of the wood. Water should not be used in excess amounts, nor should it ever be allowed to stand on wood surfaces.
  • For more thorough cleaning and removal of oils, grime and soil buildup, use a mild detergent solution and wipe dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Avoid using cleaners containing any form of abrasives or corrosive agents.
  • All cleaners, even mild ones, leave a residue that can be harmful to the surface if not thoroughly removed. This is an often overlooked part of the cleaning process; a clean, damp cloth is usually sufficient.

Disinfection

  • Thoroughly clean all surfaces first, according to the instructions above.
  • Apply an alcohol solution of at least 70% using a soft cloth; wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe again with a dry cloth and allow the final alcohol traces to quickly evaporate.

Essential Reminders

  • Read and follow carefully the directions and precautions on any cleaner/disinfectant, noting places that are suitable, or unsuitable, for its use.
  • Address stains as quickly as possible. The longer a stain remains on any surface, the more difficult it will be to remove.
  • Do NOT let moisture stand on any surface. Surfaces should be wiped dry.
  • No material is immune from stains or soiling.
  • Lack of cleaning or improper cleaning will shorten the life of your product.
